Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises is called MSME in short form. According to the MSME Act made in 2006, the types of MSMEs have been determined, these types are as follows:

Definition set for manufacturing industries under MSME

Definition of micro industry: The industries in which machines costing up to Rs 25 lakh were installed, they were known as micro industries i.e. micro industries under MSME.

Definition of small scale industry: The industry in which machines costing from Rs 25 lakh to Rs 5 crore were installed, they were known as small scale industries i.e. small industries under MSME.

Definition of Medium Industry: The industry in which machines costing from Rs 5 crore to Rs 50 crore were installed, they were known as medium industry i.e. medium size industry under MSME.

Definition set for service industries under MSME

Definition of micro industry: The service industry in which up to Rs 25 lakh has been spent in setting up or a total investment of Rs 25 lakh has been made, it was called micro industry in the service sector under MSME.

Definition of small scale industry: The service industry in which up to 50 lakh rupees has been spent in setting up or 50 lakh rupees has been invested in total, it was called small industry of the service sector under MSME.

Definition of medium industry: The service industry in which up to Rs 5 crore has been spent in setting up or a total investment of Rs 5 crore has been made, it was called medium industry i.e. medium industry of the service sector under MSME.

The definition of MSME was changed in 2018

In addition to this definition, the definition of MSME was done by the central government in 2018 according to the annual turnover in the industry. The government’s argument was that now industries should not be identified on the basis of size but on the basis of annual turnover. The following are the definitions based on turnover maintained in 2018:

Micro Industries: Industries with annual turnover of less than 5 crores were called micro ie small industries.

Small Scale Industries: Industries with annual turnover between 5 crores to 75 crores were called small scale industries.

Medium Industries: The industry with annual turnover between 75 crores to 250 crores was called medium industry.

The definition of MSME has changed in 2020

Launching the relief announcement package ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign in June 2020, as per the instructions of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Smt. Nirmala Sitharaman announced a new definition of micro, small and medium industries. The following is the new definition of MSME:
